The TARDIS arrives on an isolated Earth Colony; the inhabitants are all quite bizzare, the society seems to be happy and filled with odd rituals and happy songs. But underneath the colony, a monster lives, brainwashing and controlling the society.
In 1987 or 1988, this might be used to describe those two "oddball" stories, Paradise Towers or The Happiness Patrol. However, it also describes The Macra Terror so well that I was almost convinced that I was watching a black and white slide show of a third story from that time period. Even the Macra's eyes glow like Kroagaon's!
Perhaps because the story is in black and white, however, the story is easier to enjoy than the two McCoy ones, and more of the cast seems to take the story seriously; and I'm sure that's a good reason why this story is more highly rated.
Three companions (Ben, Polly, and Jamie) work less well than in the Hartnell era -- they aren't as often all used to their fullest.
The reconstruction of this is adequate; the pictures and audio are all clear and you can understand the story. There are two techniques that distinguish this reconstruction from others -- the captioning technique and the greater use of fades between slides. The captions scroll across the bottom of the screen; an acceptable approach, but occassionally distracting, especially if they aren't completely necessary. The fades, in my opinion, work well -- they weren't used too frequently, but added a little more visual interest.
This is another enjoyable story to watch and enjoy; and the reconstruction successfully brings the story across to a new audience.
