In the spring of 1987, I was a nearly-sixteen year old Doctor Who fan. I was also, for my crimes, the editor of a Doctor Who fanzine.
As I write this, in the spring of 2004, a new Doctor has been cast, and the series is starting again. But with this issue, we look back to the last time a new Doctor was set to take control of a Doctor Who television series made in England, when Sylvester McCoy took over the role from Colin Baker. It was also the issue after Patrick Troughton had passed away, after having visited the Twin Cities with Colin Baker the previous autumn.
The Earthbound Timelords are collecting an archive of old fanzines, and I promised that I'd scan in some back issues for them. This seemed an obvious issue to scan in for them.
I look at this like you would look back on anything that you would do in your teenage years. It's sad, tragic, and explains why I didn't date much when I was in school. There is a part of me that would like to let the past be buried, but there are some pieces of Who-lore that I think are of interest today -- Gail Bennett's art, various notes from Bonnie Langford and the Doctor Who production office concerning his departure, Patrick Troughton's Obituary from the Star Tribune, and a feeling of what an American Doctor Who fanzine produced in the 1980s by a bunch of teenagers was really like.
This is a product of several people, obviously, and the credit still goes to them. The presentation is all my fault. Forgive us all, we were young.
Given the vision and technology of it's time, we cross over the decades and return to the 1980s, and present Volume 2, Issue 4, <=?=>, the official newsletter of the Whoniversity.
