Ood enough

I'm disappointed to see that the BBC is being a little over zealous in protecting their trademarks when they ask to removes a Doctor Who fan’s knitting patterns from the Web.

It's this sort of fan activity that kept Doctor Who alive for the period of time between 1989 and 2005 -- and it was this sort of fan activity that encouraged people like Paul Cornell, Mark Gatiss, Gary Russell, and lots of other people that have now worked on the new television series.

I'm sure it's some over enthusiastic person somewhere in the BBC -- and I certainly respect that the BBC needs to protect their property -- but I think there should be a way for people to celebrate their love for the show in creative ways -- and to share that amongst other fans.

Very sad to see.

The Doctor Who Hugo trend continues

For the second year in a row three Doctor Who episodes having been nominated for a Hugo. And I know if I was a voter The Girl in the Fireplace would definitely have my vote.

This piece of art called Doctor's Girls is all sorts of awesome. It's nice to see all of the new fan art and fan activity that's starting to come up now that the new series is really inspiring people again -- but not just the new series (which is awesome) -- but also the classic series as well.

Craig Hinton

I'm sad and shocked to hear reports about Doctor Who fan and author Craig Hinton's passing. I had met him a couple of times at Gallifrey, and had been involved with some of the same forums online throughout the years as well.

I have positive recollections of the Doctor Who novels he wrote for Virgin, and I believe that his work with Millennial Rites started the rehabilitation trend of both Colin Baker's Doctor and Bonnie Langford's Melanie that continued throughout the novels and audios. And while The Crystal Bucephalus wasn't the only place to foreshadow Gallifrey's destruction, it was certainly one of the most memorable early examples.

I remember that Craig was always straight forward about his work -- he happily pieced together the pieces of Doctor Who mythology, in a fashion that wasn't always fashionable amongst the hard core -- he was the first to describe what he did as "fanwank", after all. But I think that showed how much he enjoyed the mythology and made his work fun for fans to read.

My thoughts go out to all of Craig's friends and family.
